Scott Cacciatore gives his top 10 best sports athlete 1980-Present. Of course there have been many great athletes but I based my list on which athletes dominated their sport for a long period of time. Notice I do not have one baseball player on the list because I feel that there was not one player that dominated the sport the way Babe Ruth did 80 some years ago. Alex Rodriquez might be the closest but he never won a World Series and you cant make a top 10 list until you have at least 1 ring.
10- Kobe Bryant - To me he is the closest thing we have seen or might ever see to Michael Jordan. I have a feeling he is going to win another ring this year. He has won 3 championships already and has been one of the best clutch players in the history of the NBA.
9- Roger Federer - This guy has been the best tennis player in the world for about 6 years now and he continues to dominate. He is so far ahead of the second best player in the world that he has to be on this list. He has been consistent each and ever year and if he can finally win a French Open he would move up on this list.
8- Jerry Rice- The best WR of all time. He simply dominated defenses for years in the 1980's and early 1990's. The 49ers offense was easily the best in the league for a period of about 10 years. Noone could stop him which is why he makes this list.
7- Joe Montana - Four super bowl rings will get you on any top 10 list. He didnt have the best overall skills but he was the best QB of the 1980's and probably of all time.
6- Larry Bird - Everyone knows how great Bird was...the best pure shooter of all time. He could pass the ball as well as Magic Johnson and shoot better then him.
5- Magic Johnson-Him and Bird could easily be higher on this list but number 5 isnt so bad. He obviously won MVP's and championships and ran the Lakers fast paced offense for years. He was the best point guard of all time and I believe we will never see another like him again.
4-Mario Lemieux- Alot of people dont realize how good Mario truly was, but in case you dont know check his statistics for his career. He was an amazing talent leading the Penguins to Stanley Cups. He did it so easily and definitely dominated every game he played in...the best hockey player of all time?? maybe..or maybe number 3 on this list holds that honor.
3- Wayne Gretzky- The greatest of all time..he put up numbers in the mid 1980's that had never been seen before. He lead the Oilers to four stanley cups and was easily the best player in Hockey for many years, until a younger Mario Lemieux took that title away from him. He was a great great player.
2- Tiger Woods - Well when you win basically 70% of the tournaments that you enter in golf you probably should be number 1 on this list. The guy is leaps and bounds ahead of whoever is the second best golfer in the world. His driving power might be the best ever and he always makes the clutch put when he needs it. He has never lost a tournament when leading after 3 rounds and has won all 4 of Golfs grand slam tournaments including the Masters, US Open, British Open. The best ever in Golf.
1- Michael Jordan- The best ever..its that simple...and I dont just mean in the NBA. He is the best athlete we will ever see in any sport. He dominated basketball for many years winning 6 championships. He never even played with another hall of fame player like Magic and Larry Bird did but he still won all those titles. He raised the level of his game in the playoffs averaging a record 34 points per game. He just refused to lose and his will and competitive nature will never be matched by anyone, ever. There will never be another, and noone will dominate any sport the way he did in his prime ever again.
This is just my opinion...that of Scott Cacciatore
